There’s a phrase I say often before family sessions, and this Yorktown family lived it fully:
If you let the kids lead, you’ll go home with the best new memories.
This was my first time photographing this family, and from the very beginning it was clear they trusted the process — and more importantly, were ready to have fun!
A Session Full of Movement, Laughter, and Joy
Piper and Decker arrived ready to play. From the very first photo the girls wanted to spin in circles, and laughed without a care in the world.
Instead of slowing them down or asking them to perform, we leaned into what they loved:
- Climbing all over dad
- Spinning, jumping, and chasing each other
- Cuddles and tickle fights
By the end of the session, when I packed up and headed out, they stayed behind — still playing, still laughing, still soaking up the moment together. And honestly? That’s when you know a session was exactly what it was meant to be.
Parents Who Leaned All the Way In
From the start, mom and dad were incredibly relaxed.
Their one request?
“We don’t want JCPenney photos.”
And that’s always my promise.
They wanted images that would remind them of this season of life — what their kids loved, how they moved, how they laughed, how they piled into their arms without thinking twice.
Before every session, I tell parents to act like they skipped school and went to the playground. Let the kids lead. Follow their joy. That’s where the real smiles and giggles live.
This family didn’t hesitate. They trusted it completely — and the result was honest, connected, and full of life.
Why I Let Kids Lead Family Sessions
The more you ask a child to stop, stand still, and smile, the less fun they’re going to have.
I don’t want to document perfection. I want to document joy — life through their eyes, exactly as they are in this moment.
The more you ask a child to stop, stand still, and smile, the less fun they’re going to have.
There is no need to chase the “perfect” photos — maybe growing up in the 90s — studio photography taught us that a “good” photo had to look a certain way. Stand still. Smile on cue. Don’t move.
But the truth is, the photos you’ll treasure most are the ones that feel real — the ones that remind you how it felt, not just how it looked.
One of the images I still think about from my own childhood is a simple Polaroid my mom took of my dad and me making silly faces together. I cherish that photo a hundred times more than the many JCPenney portraits we had framed on our walls.
Of course, I still make sure we capture a few more traditional, postcard‑worthy images during every session. But when we spend an hour together, my main goal is to document who you are — the connection you share and the love you give to this world.
Looking Ahead (and Back)
In ten years, these girlies will be in high school and middle school. They’ll love different things, move differently, and step into entirely new versions of themselves.
My hope is that when mom and dad look back at these images, they’re transported right back to the days when they could still scoop their babies up into their arms — when their little hands fit perfectly in theirs, and the giggles from this day echoed back into their minds like a boomerang.
Why Yorktown Is Perfect for Family Sessions
Yorktown is one of my favorite spots in Hampton Roads for family sessions because it truly has it all:
- Easy parking
- Open spaces to run and explore
- Beautiful architecture
- A nearby beach
- Roads often closed to traffic on weekends
It gives families room to breathe, move, and simply be together — which is exactly what sessions like this need.
The Takeaway
When you let go of expectations and let your kids lead, you don’t just walk away with beautiful photos.
You walk away with memories.
And those are the ones that last.
